Heroes in Our Hallways

Canyon ISD Celebrates School Resource Officers, Law Enforcement

In the spirit of Law Enforcement Appreciation Day earlier this week, Canyon ISD extends a heartfelt thank you to our School Resource Officers (SROs), Canyon Police Department, Amarillo Police Department, Randall County Sheriff’s Office, and the Department of Public Safety. These dedicated men and women play a vital role in keeping our schools safe and secure.

The SRO program in Canyon ISD aims to promote a safe learning environment, prevent and deter crime, serve as positive role models, establish a strong liaison between the police and schools, and educate students about public safety concerns.

Here are some of our dedicated SROs and the schools they serve:

  • APD Corporal Adam Gutierrez, SRO at West Plains High School

  • APD Corporal Jeb Hilton, SRO at West Plains Jr. High

  • APD Corporal Josh Slatten, SRO at Randall High School

  • APD Corporal Joey Lopez, SRO at Randall Junior High

  • CPD Corporal Jimmy Hernandez, SRO at Canyon Jr. High School

  • CPD Corporal Judd Wolfe, SRO for Canyon High School

  • CPD Sergeant Kody McCarrell, SRO Supervisor at Midway Alternative High School

Every day these incredible individuals walk our school hallways, sharing smiles and high fives, all while ensuring our campuses are safe and secure. But their role goes beyond just safety; they are mentors, friends, and are an integral part of the Canyon ISD Family.

Canyon ISD Superintendent Dr. Darryl Flusche commended the officers for their commitment. "Their dedication to our schools goes far beyond ensuring safety; they are a vital part of our community, significantly contributing to a nurturing and supportive educational environment.”

The district also acknowledges the leadership of Chief Steve Brush of the Canyon Police Department, Chief Martin Birkenfeld of the Amarillo Police Department, and Sheriff Chris Forbis of the Randall County Sheriff's Office for their significant contributions to the safety of Canyon ISD staff and students.

We want to express our deepest gratitude to these everyday heroes. Their dedication and service create a positive and secure environment for our students to learn and grow. To our school resource officers and local law enforcement partners: Thank you for being our heroes in the hallways!
