New Texas Law Regarding Cell Phone Use

New Texas Law – No Cell Phone Use During the School Day

The 89th Texas Legislature recently passed, and Governor Abbott signed into law, House Bill 1481. This new law prohibits students from using personal communication devices - such as cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, earbuds, and other Bluetooth-enabled devices - during the school day at all Texas public schools.

The law goes into effect with the start of the 2025–2026 school year and applies to students in grades K–12.

As this change approaches, we encourage parents to begin talking with their children about what this will mean. Devices may not be used at any time during the school day.

CISD is currently reviewing our local policy to align with the new law. As we finalize plans, we’ll continue to communicate updates with families, students, and staff.

CISD recommends students not bring personal communication devices to school. If a device is brought, it must be powered off (not in silent mode) and stored in a backpack, locker, or locked vehicle for the entire school day. Devices may not be carried on the student, including in a pocket, purse, or any personal item.

In addition to House Bill 1481, other recent legislation will impact Texas public schools in the coming school year. We’ll continue to keep families informed on social media and ParentSquare as we work through those changes.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to empower lifelong success.
