Superintendent's Monthly Update

October 28, 2025

CISD Family,

Our district theme for 2025–26 is Elevate.  My message to our staff is to elevate self, to elevate your team, and to elevate your students.

Community and Connection
Earlier this month, CISD co-hosted the Regional Industry & Education Summit with Region 16, Amarillo College, WTAMU, Amarillo ISD, and area business leaders. The event connected educators and employers to strengthen career pathways and align classroom learning with local workforce needs. By forming these partnerships, high schools can better equip students with the skills and training needed to fulfill the demands of the panhandle employers.

Financial Stewardship
Canyon ISD has again earned the highest financial rating of Superior “A” from the Texas Education Agency under the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST), a distinction the district has received every year since 1999. This recognition affirms our continued commitment to fiscal responsibility to direct resources supporting students, staff, and classrooms. This is a reflection of our Finance Department’s diligence and our Board of Trustees’ strong fiscal stewardship.

Expanding Opportunity
We are pleased to share the launch of the Amarillo College Badger Bound Scholarship available to our CISD students. Beginning this school year, CISD graduates who complete 15 hours of dual credit during high school will be eligible for up to 45 tuition-free college hours, including books and course materials. This opportunity enables students to complete an associate’s degree with no additional expense. Badger Bound creates another avenue to empower lifelong success for our students.

Extracurricular Student Success

Our student programs are off to a tremendous start this year!

  • Marching Band: Our Canyon High, Randall High and West Plains High Marching Bands have delivered stellar performances at contests throughout “Bandtober” and are headed to the State Marching Competition in San Antonio on November 5th. Good luck to our bands!

  • Choir: Our high school music students are advancing through All-Region auditions. The CHS Chamber Choir recently received the State Champion Award in the Performing America Next Level Contest - Small School Division for a performance of ‘Psalm 100’.

  • Tennis: All 3 high school Tennis teams advanced to the Regional Tournament, with Canyon High advancing to the State Finals. Congratulations to the Eagles for bringing home the State Runner-Up trophy!

  • Ag Issues/FFA Competition:  The CHS Ag Issues Team (Canyon FFA) is headed to the National Competition this week. We wish the Ag Issues Team good luck!

  • Cross Country:  Our Girls Cross Country Teams swept the Regional Meet with CHS Lady Eagles in 1st, RHS Lady Raiders in 2nd, and WPHS Lady Wolves in 3rd. CHS Boys placed 1st at Regionals and 2 Boys from WPHS qualified for State. The State Cross Country Meet is Saturday, November 1st. Good luck to our Eagles, Raiders, and Wolves!

  • Football:  We have the Goat Game (CHS vs RHS) and our CISD Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony coming up on November 7th.

  • Fine Arts: High School musical productions are coming up soon! West Plains presents ‘Addams Family’, Randall performs  ‘Big Fish’, and Canyon High brings ‘Frozen Jr’ to the stage this November. Check each high school's websites for details. You do not want to miss these productions!

Looking Ahead
Enrollment now exceeds 11,520 students, and our district continues to grow alongside the communities we serve. That growth strengthens the importance of our mission to provide a high-quality education for every learner in Canyon ISD. Our Strategic Plan Year 2 goals keep our focus on the priorities set forth by our community, staff, and students. You can read more about our Strategic Plan here. It’s been a great start to the 2025-2026 school year and we are excited to take steps toward our goals across the school year.
