Just the Facts

Just The Facts

Canyon ISD has created this webpage to share facts about Canyon ISD, and emerging issues and topics associated with the District.
We know questions arise from time to time, and we strive to provide accurate, timely information. As a reminder, Canyon ISD has many ways to stay connected. Please continue to visit the Canyon ISD website, follow us on social media channels, and look for email communication from us.  We are happy to speak with you about questions, concerns, and input.

We Want You To Know

Books:  Click here for library information and policies/procedures. Canyon ISD has a process for parents to let us know about any resources where they may have concerns. Click the following link to learn more about how we involve our community in selecting and reviewing resources that are used in our classrooms:  Instructional Resources Consideration Committee Information website.  Our Board of Trustees has adopted a new policy based on guidance from TEA that allows us to review library materials in a similar manner to classroom resources. Click here to review EFA Local and EFB Local.

Critical Race Theory:  CRT is not allowed to be taught in Texas schools per TEA. Canyon ISD does not teach CRT.

STAAR Opt-Out Information:  We are required by Texas Education Code Chapter 39 and 19 Texas Administrative Code Chapter 101 to administer the STAAR assessment to all students receiving instruction in the essential knowledge and skills.  Below is the Texas Education Code 26.010.
Sec. 26.010.  EXEMPTION FROM INSTRUCTION.  (a)  A parent is entitled to remove the parent's child temporarily from a class or other school activity that conflicts with the parent's religious or moral beliefs if the parent presents or delivers to the teacher of the parent's child a written statement authorizing the removal of the child from the class or other school activity.  A parent is not entitled to remove the parent's child from a class or other school activity to avoid a test or to prevent the child from taking a subject for an entire semester.
(b)  This section does not exempt a child from satisfying grade level or graduation requirements in a manner acceptable to the school district and the agency.
Based on the requirements we are under as a public school district, any student who is present during the assessment  window when the STAAR test is administered, including makeup days, will be directed to his/her testing room and given an opportunity to test.  If the student refuses to enter the testing room or otherwise refuses to take the test by the completion of the testing window then the testing coordinator will mark the test/(s) as “S” code, which means score. The online assessment/(s) would be scored, therefore would be counted as a failure against the student.

Suicide Prevention: The School Health Advisory Committee made a recommendation and the Board of Trustees approved Hope Squad as the suicide prevention program.

Health CurriculumAfter careful consideration and in compliance with the state regulations, the Canyon ISD Board of Trustees and administration chose not to implement a stand-alone human sexuality curriculum.
The State of Texas requires a health curriculum to be taught in public schools. In alignment with the recommendations put forth by the District's School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC), the Canyon ISD Board of Trustees approved the resources CISD utilizes to deliver the health curriculum. You can find what is offered here: https://canyonisd.net/healthcurriculum
We understand that parents want curriculum lessons that align with their family values. Therefore, we want to emphasize that parents can choose to opt-in if they wish their child to learn additional topics related to human sexuality, child abuse, human trafficking, dating violence and family violence.

As always, our dedicated teachers and staff are available to support and address any questions or concerns you may have regarding the curriculum or your child's education. Please feel free to reach out to them.
Thank you for your continued trust and partnership in ensuring a quality education for our students.
